# How To Practice Conservation Every Summer Weekend

Summer weekends are longer and lazier. (Maybe it's the heat?) They're also a great time to remember our responsibility toward the environment amidst the cookouts, pool parties and games. Summer weekends can be times for both celebration and conservation. From Memorial Day through Labor Day, there’s no need to compromise on either! This weekend, let us collectively embrace the responsibility to practice good conservation habits while celebrating summer. Here are some thoughtful actions we can incorporate into our weekend festivities:

**Opt for Sustainable Decorations**

Ditch the single-use plastic decorations and opt for reusable or biodegradable options. Cloth banners are a fantastic alternative to plastic streamers and can be reused year after year, whatever your occasion from a birthday or anniversary to a patriotic holiday. You can find cloth banners in a variety of colors and patterns to match any décor. Paper lanterns are another great reusable option that is fun, festive and sustainable! They come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and they can be used to add a festive touch to any room. You can also make your own paper lanterns using recycled materials, such as old newspapers or magazines.

Potted plants are a beautiful and eco-friendly way to decorate for the holidays. They can be used to add a touch of greenery to your home, and they can also be replanted outdoors after the holidays. When choosing potted plants, look for those that are native to your area. This will help to reduce your environmental impact and support local ecosystems. **Eco-Friendly Cookouts**

When planning your weekend gathering, prioritize sustainability by sourcing locally grown, organic ingredients. This supports local farmers and reduces the environmental impact of transporting food over long distances. Again, choose reusable plates, cutlery and serving ware to minimize waste, and if you're hosting a large group, consider compostable or biodegradable options.
